Wedding Reception Ideas

by leony on July 21, 2009

Most young girls grow up having roseate notions of a picture perfect wedding. But once they grow up and actually get engaged, the dreams are shattered by harsh reality. A perfect wedding requires truckloads of money, not feasible unless you take a loan. And it is a bad idea to start off this new phase of your life with your loved one with a debt looming large.

Your wedding reception can prove to be a very costly affair if you take into consideration expenses such as rent for the wedding hall, food and beverages, alcohol, dj/musical band, decoration, etc. Don’t panic. There are ways and means of cost cutting. But to begin with, do away with any notion that you have to please and pamper your guests. They are invited to be with you on the special day, not to criticize the provisions of food and entertainment.

To cut down wedding expenses, do away with all the frills. Have the wedding earlier in the day and save on a lavish dinner. You can have finger foods and hour devours to go with your wedding cake. You can do away with alcohol. Or maybe have a toast of champagne and then shots for dollar dance. Shots for the dollar dance is a good idea because guests wanting alcohol will have to shell out cash to dance with you to get it. Alternately you can simply serve tea, coffee and soft drinks and have a cash bar where people will have to buy their own drink. If uncle George wants booze let him pay for it.

If you are insistent about a dinner reception, then look for nearby cooking/culinary schools that will cater food at the cost price. Alternately you could ask each close relative to cook one special dish and have a potluck dinner. Forget about costly linen tablecloths, silverware and china. Just renting them costs a fortune. Besides you will have to wash every single item (except tablecloths) before returning them. Consider using paper or plastic tablecloths. Disposable items will save you the headache of returning rentals when you should be on your honeymoon. Use paper plates and plastic silverware. None of your guests will mind the absence of fancy cutlery and linen. If they are the types who mind, you should reconsider inviting them! Nowadays you can also easily coordinate the colors of your plates, cutlery and napkins with your wedding colors. That looks grand.

What about entertainment? Check out local colleges for bands or DJs. Some of them are very good. Otherwise you can simply download your favorite music (download lots to provide for back up) from the internet and save on an MP3 player or burn onto a CD. Ask a tech savvy person to play the specified music at specific times (if any) for you at the reception.

Creativity and thrift are the keys when planning your wedding and reception. And don’t hesitate about cost cutting. It is your wedding after all, sponsored by your purse.
